If you don’t have an odometer, you can calculate the distance you’re traveling by doing the following things:

  1. When you start cycling on the bike, check the speedometer. It’s essential to maintain a constant speed. The number on your speedometer will be in miles per hour.
  2. Convert the hours to minutes. If your current speed is five miles per hour, you’ll divide 60 (because there are 60 minutes in one hour) by five to learn how many minutes it would take you to cycle one mile. So, based on the above example, you would need to cycle for 12 minutes to reach one mile.
  3. You can also figure out the distance you’re covering per minute. So, if your speed was five miles per hour, you’ll have to divide five miles by 60 – that means that the miles you’re covering are 0.083, so you’re cycling approximately 0.08 miles every minute.

Important note: You will need to ensure that your speed doesn’t drop on the speedometer. If you’re cycling at a moderate speed, this will be easier to maintain so that you won’t experience a decrease in speed that will throw off your calculation. If that happens, you will have to increase the time of your cycling session so that you’ll achieve the distance you want.

Before you can work out how many miles you’re covering in your spin class, you need to bear in mind that your mileage will depend on various factors. These include the amount of effort you’re putting in and the amount of hills you ride.

Generally, though, most people in a spin class will be able to reach around 10 miles during a half-hour class.

    The speed you’re using when cycling is measured by cadence, which is the amount of wheel revolutions per minute (RPM).

Cycling on a spin bike will require you to work harder to get the spin bike moving. However, the pedals will spin when you stop pedaling, which means the bike will have the same resistance control that you’ll find in an outdoor bicycle.

That said, when you start using a spin bike after having used an exercise bike you might need to get used to it. This is because a spin bike has a natural position instead of the upright position found in exercise bikes. The spin bike’s seat and handles are located at the same level and you have a small seat, or saddle. By comparison, an exercise bike will have handles that are positioned higher than the seat and a larger seat.

If you want to engage in an intense workout, a spin bike can accommodate this more than a regular exercise bike. This is because you can stand up on a spin bike. It’s also worth bearing in mind that a spin bike class is usually of the high-intensity variety. This is why it’s worth easing into it before you jump in and push yourself to the limit.

That said, even if you’re attending a spin class, you can still go at your own pace depending on how fast or vigorously you want your exercise session to be. Even though your instructor will let you know when you have to increase the resistance or lower your resistance, you aren’t forced to follow their instructions as you can choose the level that feels the most comfortable.

  • You’re not clipping into your pedals. You need to wear cycling shoes that connect to your pedals. This ensures that your feet won’t slip off your pedals and you can work on having the best posture when spinning to make the most of your session.
  • You haven’t set up your bike. If you don’t set up your spin bike properly to accommodate your body, this will make spin classes feel so much more difficult than they need to be. You’ll also put yourself at risk of injuries. Avoid putting the saddle too low as this will make you lose your legs’ range of motion and can cause pain. It’s good to know that the maximum seat height should be at your hip bone. When you are sitting on the bike, your feet should be flat and your knees slightly bent. So, get to your class early and make sure you adjust your bike accordingly!
